Enhanced transposable elements

Transposable elements (TEs) are nucleic acid sequences that can move within the genome but are mostly silenced in humans. While it has been suggested that TEs have a role in cancer, their contribution to gene regulatory function has remained unknown. Now, Karttunen et al. identify TEs with functional, tissue-specific enhancer activity in colorectal and liver cancer cell lines.
